Rants
Hey all.
So Odd tells me that as the writer of the comic, I am obliged to post comment and complaints in the form of regular Rants.
I'm supposed to pick up on random points of peeviness and carry on as a form of filling out the readers experience of the comic, and giving them and idea as to who i am.
or something like that. i was a bit baked when he told me.
So now, I have finally got rights to edit this thing, and the first thing I want to bring up is my official protest againts having to Rant.
Why is this a requirement for the modern web comic? Everyone does it, but why?
Do you, the readers, demand it? Is writing a web comic such a frustrating vocation that the only way to deal with it is to spout lyrical and farcical in between creating the comic?
I have read countless Garfield, Far Side, Blondie, Wizard of Id, and have yet to read, or expect any comment from them other than that contained in the Comic. Do these print artists get special exemption from this, or do they (I havent checked) keep their Rants a more private matter?
When myself and Odd decided to make Loosely Based, I thought that I was just writing a strip that he was drawing.
But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
As soon as we get a nice website I am informed of my other duties.
I will try rant here a bit, but until i 'get' the concept, dont expect too much from them.
I just felt that I should open up this one way (ooooooh, but I commented--so what, i probably wont read it) channel of communication with this Rant, the anti-Rant Rant.

Ok, i've already bitched about our illustrious ANC government's poor record, so I'm not going to go into it again with the xenophobic violence. (if Ian ever logs into the blog, he can rant about it ^_^)
My mother got back from an extended visit to the US recently and amongst other things she brought back a stack of Science mags for my dad and I. This morning I was reading through Discovery Magazine (www.discoverymagazine.com) and there's some really cool tech starting to emerge.
Did you know that we're using yeast and genetically engineered viruses to grow batteries and integrated circuits? I think that's pretty intense... nanotech biological factories in a test tube.
Scientists have also apparently figured out how to overcome the massive amounts of programing needed for an AI to interact successfully with a changing environment... the new way of programing AI is to get it to learn (much like human and animal babies) about it's body movement by itself. This removes the need for masses of If-Then programing and enables the machine to evolve new processes to deal with anything that it might encounter. Cool hey?
Sure these technologies are still very much in an embryonic stage, but with the pace of advancement (and the US government spending major cash to speed up the development of robotic soldiers) it's not going to be too long before we're interacting with humanoid robots on a daily basis. Are you ready for that?

And we're back! Thank you all for sticking with us over my exams ^_^ we're back to the Tuesday-Thursday schedule and should be getting a slight upgrade in the art... so keep checking in!
You guys can also vote for who you want Kiba to nail next, so get yourself to our FBpage (link on the right) and get voting.
Finally, here's a link to another comic that's written and drawn by a friend of ours (i think it's cool), so have a look! -> www.syecomics.blogspot.com
See you Thursday!

This current eruption of xenophobic violence we have been seeing in South Africa can be seen as nothing more than the complete breakdown of the rule of law. Maintaining order is the most fundamental responsibility of a government and ours is failing, miserably.
I was, however, pleased to hear (thank you 702 ^_^) that our ANC government has switched away from their usual denialism and have accepted that we have a crisis. What I'm hoping is that they're not expecting that to be enough, they now have to DEAL with the crisis and with 2010 around the corner you can be sure that the world is watching.
Our country's future (at least as far as the travel industry and overseas investors are concerned) hinges on our actions in the next few days, weeks and months.
If I was a god-fearing man I'd ask you to say a prayer for wisdom but as it stands... Here's holding thumbs.

The reason there haven't been any strips for a week is that we stopped doing them... .... APRIL FOOLS! ^_^ back on track now.

I'm not quite happy with the robe on this one.... but then it's fully digital. I think it works out better if I draw it first.

As an aside... can you BELIEVE that the eskom executives want to give themselves performance bonuses? PERFORMANCE BONUSES?!?!! are these people crazy or just stupid? Either way, I'm not so sure I want them managing the life blood of our countries economy.
Ah well... this is what revolutionary politics gets you, i suppose.

Wallpaper #1
There were a number of reasons for the switch, but I don't foresee another one any time soon... unless of course we can find someone to code us a site for ourselves... *wishful sigh*.
To commemorate this historic (more contemporary, really) occasion, here's a LBcomic wallpaper.
Let me know what you think ^_^

We play with the rules
1) You are always playing the game, the aim is to forget the game, and so when you think about the game you are losing the game.
2) When you lose the game you have to say, in some way, that you have lost the game.
3) When someone asks about the game, you have to tell them the rules.
Incidentally we don't count it as unfair to state you've lost the game using a pseudonym for the game i.e. Alzheimer's, so long as someone has the chance of understanding, nor is it unfair to chalk "You Lost" on someone's drive, wall or door.

Hey guys! (and possibly girls!) ^_^
Here we are with the second comic... only 4 days off schedule. I wish I could say that I was so busy preparing to get back to varsity that I just didn't have time to upload it. Unfortunately, that would be a lie... I got lazy. Oops.
I really will try to keep on schedule from now on, so check back tomorrow for the next one.
This is the first of many emo jokes in the comic... look at it as a running gag if you like ^_^.
Enjoy.

Welcome to the first post of Loosely Based! I hope everyone is going to enjoy the comic enough to keep checking back ^_^. I'll be trying to update every Tuesday and Thursday, but we'll see how it goes.
I know that the site is currently having difficulties... or rather that I'm having difficulties making it look how I want, but I'm hoping I'll be able to sort them out by the weekend, so check back. If there's anyone out there who'd like to take on web mastering duties, let me know ^_^
Not to be Piro-esque but I must in this first post apologise for my lack of artistic skill... don't complain about it... cause it's probably not going to get any better.
The first comic is based on the current energy crisis that we're experiencing in South Africa, it's mainly due to poor government planning but I can't help taking a dig at eskom anyway ^_^
If you have any comments or suggestions, please drop me a line... hope you all enjoy the site.
